Top 5 College Study Tips

Top 5 College Study Tips Carving out study time in college can be tricky because there are often more distractions than in high school. There are always people around, events to attend, social activities to partake inin addition to a schedule with more freedom to control. Build upon some of the study methods you used in high school to implement these top college study tips: 1. Make a study plan As soon as it makes sense to youa week out, a month out, etc.make a study schedule for yourself for the days leading up to a test. This can be extremely helpful in spacing out your studying so you wont have to cram the day before and pull an all-nighter, which often causes more stress. You can decide to study an hour or two each day, or choose which concepts or units to review per study session. Remember to include breaks, as well! While studying straight through for two hours might work for some, a lot of us truly benefit from scheduled breaks. This helps us double down on the actual study time, minimize distractions, and better enjoy the breaks themselves, as theyll feel more earned. 2. Find settings that suit you A popular location to study may of course be your campus library. Its well-liked for good reason: it stays open late (and sometimes 24/7), offers print and electronic resources, and is quiet. Check out the librarys study rooms, which you may need to sign up for ahead of time, as they can provide a bit more silence and privacy. Top floors can be great for this as well. Your school might have other designated quiet spaces; perhaps a campus art museum or a certain area of the student union that you could take advantage of. However, if you like working with more background noise, such as music or the hustle and bustle of people around you, consider a local coffee shop or your dorm common area. You might even bump into a friend from the same class, which can help refuel you for more studying. Also, if you have access to a car or other transportation, you may wish to explore what other hidden gems are available near your college town; this can provide much needed different scenery. 3. Rewrite notes or make flashcards Writing down key concepts from a textbook or rewriting your noteson the page or on flashcardsare excellent ways to better cement information into your mind. The act of writing slows you down, allowing you to be with the concepts longer and spend more time actively focusing on them. The process is effective, as well as the productyou can take your page of notes or flashcards with you as portable study guides whenever you have a free moment. Waiting in line at the bank or at the DMV? Both great times to whip out your study aids and make the most out of a few stray minutes. 4. Prioritize your best time of day Think about what time of day you have the most energy, and schedule your study time accordingly. Are you one of the few college early birds? Do you like mid-day studying or do you slide into an afternoon slump? What part of nighttime works for you, early evening or closer to midnight? Once youre aware of this, youll want to use your most energetic hours for your most difficult subjects, which can help you make the most of your time. Also, as a college student, your schedule is likely to vary greatly day-to-day, so dont be afraid to try different things throughout the week and see what suits you best! 5. Visit office hours A unique aspect of college, and of school in general, are the professors with open doors to help you. Take advantage of this by visiting them during their scheduled office hours or possibly setting up a separate appointment if you have time conflicts. Meeting with a professor a week or two before an exam can be useful in directing your study plan or clarifying a confusing concept. If you wait until the last day before your test to meet, your discussion may not be as helpful, as youll have less time to process the take-aways from your conversation. You might consider attending office hours on a regular basis; youll get to build a professional relationship with your professors and the one-on-one setting is one of the easiest and best ways to learn. [RELATED: Set Up a Study Plan with Your Tutor that Works for You] These college study tips, as well as others youve picked up in high school, can help build your confidence as a college student as you become more aware of who you are as a learner. While repetition of study strategies builds stamina and helps you make the most of it, keep in mind that one strategy may work for you better at one point in your life, and not so much in another. To that end, keep trying new things and talk with classmates and professors for new suggestions. Any topics you want to know more about? Let us know! (Source: jcorifjr)Dancing can work on your upper body, something which a lot of other sports can ignore, as well as your back and stomach. For example, breakdancing and hip hop are great disciplines for toning your shoulders and arms. The same goes for Argentine tango.  Of course, it’s still the lower body that works the hardest usually when you dance. Your bum, thighs, quads, and calves will all be required when you dance.Your bum is the first part of your body that will tone when you start dancing. The technical term for these are the gluteal muscles. Of course, dancing also works on your quadriceps, the muscles on the front of your thighs. These muscles allow you to move your thighs and hips and extend your leg. That’s not everything, though. Your hamstrings, the muscles on the back of your thighs, will also get a good workout. These muscles are used to bend your leg at the knee.Your calves also play an important role in dancing as they allow you to maintain your balance and move your feet. Here are some examples of the different types of dancing and the muscle groups they work on:Upper body: hip hop, oriental, ballet.Lower body: ballroom, rock, zouk.Full body: capoeira, tango.By combining this with a balanced diet, you’ll lose weight more effectively. So are you ready to start dancing? You can find plenty of dance tutors on Superprof offering a range of different services. You can get private tutorials, online tutorials, and group tutorials.Group tutorials are good for those on a budget as the cost of the lesson is shared amongst the students in attendance. However, this does mean that the lesson won't be tailored to just you and your fitness goals.Online tutorials are when the tutor provides their lessons remotely via a programme such as Skype. Wh ile these types of lessons work better for academic subjects rather than physical activities, you can still get these types of tutorials for dancing. Since the tutor doesn't have any travel costs, they can charge less per hour than they would in regular private tutorials. One on one private tutorials are the most expensive option but they're also the most cost-effective. This is because you'll have your own dedicated tutor providing you with dance instruction that's tailored to your needs, goals, and learning styles. They can put together a plan for you and help you achieve your goals.A lot of the tutors on Superprof offer the first hour of tuition for free so you can try out their lesson, discuss your needs, and, most importantly, see if you get along before you start getting regular private dance tutorials with them. It's never been easier to learn how to dance and lose weight!

Online Differential Equation Solver Tutors

Online Differential Equation Solver Tutors Differential equation solver plays an important role in science, Engineering and social sciences. Differential equation is mainly used in Mathematics and Science applications. Differential equation is an equation that involves a variable and its derivatives with respect to one or more independent variables. Differential equation is of two types, ordinary and partial. A differential equation is a differential equation in which a single independent variable enters explicitly or implicitly. Problem 1: Solve the differential equation y d x x d y = 0 Solution: Given equation is a separable equation so this can be written as d x / x = d y / y = Now integrate on both sides we get ln |x| + c = ln |y| = Taking exponent on both sides we get |y| = e^ c |x| = This can be written as |y| = C |x| C0 = The C in the second equation does not represent the same c in the first equation. This is general form of denoting constants. = Get rid of absolute value y = C x where c not equal to zero = The solution is y = C x. Problem 2: Find the general solution of the equation xy^2 d x + (x 1)(y+1) d y= 0 Solution: Given equation is separable equation xy^2 d x + (x 1)(y+1) d y= 0 = x d x / (x 1) = - (y+1) d y / y^2 = Now integrate on both sides we get x ln |x 1| + C = - ln |y| + (1/y) = This is general solution of the equation.

French Pronunciation Guide Avoid These Common Mistakes!

French Pronunciation Guide Avoid These Common Mistakes! Sign up successful 1. “E” instead of Schwa What do Americans say when they’re at a loss for words? Uh…yep, that’s it! Say “uh” a few timesâ€"this is more or less the French schwa. The schwa, or neutral vowel, appears wherever there is an unaccented E: je, me, and seraine are a few examples. Do not pronounce these as regular American E vowels; it could change your meaning entirely. 2. Diphthongs Speaking of the French schwa, lots of Americans mess them up by adding diphthongs. In English, we close our mouths at the ends of vowels. For example, an American pronounces the word I by saying something like “aaee.” French, like other Romantic languages, does not have diphthongs. If you want a terrible American accent, go ahead and pronounce “je, the French word for I, with a diphthong. You’ll get something that sounds like “jay,” along with an eye roll from native French speakers. 3. Silent Final Consonants Many French words end with unpronounced consonants. Take, for example, the title of one of my audition arias: Les Oiseaux dans la Charmille. In this short phrase two word have silent endings: oiseaux and dans. When spoken, this phrase sounds kind of like “lez wazo da la shar meal.” Pronouncing the ends of the words ruins the smooth lilt of the French language. 4. American R instead of Uvular R In American English, we pronounce the letter R by drawing our whole tongue up to the roof of the mouth. The French, especially in Paris, use a uvular R instead. Only the back of the tongue (the part near the uvula, that dangly thing in the back of the mouth) goes up. Try doing it in front of the mirror and making sure the front of your tongue stays down. 5. French Combination Vowel U In the U.S., we often pronounce the letter U as a schwa (as in uh). In French, the letter U, as in “tu,” is a combination vowelâ€"the lips form one vowel while the tongue forms another. We don’t have combination vowels in English, so this can be especially confusing for native English speakers. There are actually several combination vowels in French, but this is the most pervasive one. The French U is a combination of the vowel “ooh” (as in room) and the vowel “ee” (as in bean). The “ooh” happens with the lips; the “ee” happens with the tongue. To form this vowel, try saying “ee.” Keep your tongue in the “ee” position while changing your lips to form an “ooh.” 6. Aspirate Consonants In English, we put emphasis on words using consonants, especially aspirate consonants like T and C/K (take that cat out!). Aspirate simply means that the vowel is followed by a little puff of air, as in the English letter H (hurry, half). French is centered around vowels, and there are no aspirate consonants. The letter H is silent (as in hiver). T and C/K consonants are pronounced dentallyâ€"farther back in the mouth than we say them in English. Place your tongue right behind your front teeth and practice saying these vowels there. For even more tips on how to perfect your French accent and pronunciation, check out this quick video lesson. Ze Tip of Ze Iceberg This is hardly an exhaustive list of the many French pronunciation rules, but it is a start. Avoid these common mistakes and you’ll already be better than most Americans who study French. By ensconcing these rules in your memory and continuing to learn more, you might get rid of that pesky American accent altogether. How to Leverage Psychology and the Science of Skill Acquisition to Improve Your GRE Score

How to Leverage Psychology and the Science of Skill Acquisition to Improve Your GRE Score GRE/MAT Graduate School Blog There is certainly a lot of content you must master to earn a high score on the GRE. Your mathematics, verbal reasoning, reading comprehension, and writing skills will be tested and obviously are key to earning a 90thpercentile GRE score (or better). That said, while many GRE tutors offer useful guidance around learning key concepts, they “miss the forest for the trees” so to speak when offering advice about how to prepare for the GRE. The importance of psychology and the science of learning when it comes to standardized test prep can’t easily be overstated. Simply thinking about your potential to score well and how best to study in the right way is the foundation to getting a great score. Three specific things to keep in mind are: a) the right mindset is critical b) lengthy, monotonous study sessions can be counterproductive and c) eventually, you’ll need to build mental stamina to perform at your best on the day you take the GRE. The right mindset is critical for success on the GRE (and it’s called a growth mindset) Your overall mindset and approach to the testing process is critically important. Avoid assuming you have a natural talent around some topics covered but will have a really hard time with others (although perhaps on some level that’s partially true, it’s almost certainly an overblown, unhelpful, and limiting perspective) because from day one, you are already admitting defeat on some level with certain topics. The idea that some people are naturally talented in this or that area, and that this natural talent is what in large part allows them to succeed or fail in that area, is called a fixed mindset. Conversely, the idea that hard work and practice build intelligence and skills is called a growth mindset. These terms and the theory behind them were developed by a Stanford Psychology Professor, Dr. Carol Dweck. In other words, there really aren’t “math people” or “writing people.” In general, skills are built through practice over time. The skills and knowledge required to earn a 320, 330 or higher on the GRE don’t go too far beyond what is learned in U.S. high schools. Even if you are starting from a somewhat deficient point, your mindset should be that, through practice, you’ll be able to build the right skills. I have not been able to find any scientific studies specifically focused on the impact of a growth mindset on GRE scores, but many studies have measured the positive impact of a growth mindset on academic performance more generally. This article on the growth mindset by Education Weekdiscusses how a growth mindset helped students living in poverty perform as well on a standardized test as students whose families had an annual income that was 13X higher. This is a remarkable statistic given the typically powerful impact of wealth on academic achievement. When learning new, difficult things, shorter, more intense sessions are generally more productive. Also, cover more than one topic in each session. Finally, test yourself frequently. One critical mistake many students studying for the GRE make is setting aside one day to study each week. It’s a temping strategy, because particularly if you are a working professional, you don’t have much time to study and you want to ensure you put the proper focus into the process. It seems logical to head to the library at 9AM on Sunday and leave six hours later. But that is just not the most efficient way to study. As this research-backed article by the American Psychological Associationmakes clear, spacing out your study sessions improves your ability to retain information. The process of stopping and starting helps the brain build new neural connections and better implant a concept or fact in your mind. So, if you need to study for 12 hours, consider 6 two-hour sessions instead of 2 six-hour sessions. You would also be well served to cover more than one topic in each study session. This is called interleaving, which TestPrepChampions defines as “incorporating multiple topics into your study sessions and then alternating between them as opposed to blocking out a longer period of time to work on just one topic.” Lots of science suggests that incorporating multiple topics into a single study session is more conducive to learning than plugging away at one topic for multiple hours. And I think this is intuitive. At some point, if you are doing 50 practice problems on the same topic, it might seem like you’ve retained the information, but your knowledge may be superficial. You don’t understand the concept on a deep level, you are just mechanically repeating the process. And of course, although, for example, GRE quantitative problems all come in one section of the exam, quantitative topics will appear randomly. All the algebra problems don’t come in a row. You’ll see algebra, and then geometry, and then probability, etc. Finally, there is lots of science around the effectiveness of active learning relative to passive learning. Passive learning would be, for example, reading about how to do a math problem. Active learning would involve frequently creating “mini tests” for yourself that force you to work through problems. I was exposed to the power of frequent “mini tests” when I took an online Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) called Learning how to Learn, taught by Barbara Oakley. Once you’ve mastered key academic skills, focus on building your mental endurance and ability to concentrate to perform well on test day. Brett Ethridge from Dominate the GRE posted a really interesting video on this page about how having mental endurance is a required skillfor performing well on the GRE. His advice is, the GRE is a grueling, four-hour test. Having the mental endurance and stamina to focus and concentrate for 4 hours is a skill, and as such, students need to practice building that skill. On some level, this advice conflicts with the advice offered in the previous section. That section implied that you shouldn’t study for too long at one time. And when you are trying to learn new concepts, this is certainly true. But as your test day nears, you need to begin to think about how best to maximize your performance on that day. And I agree with Brett that your study sessions should increase in length as test day nears. On the day you take the GRE, you’ll need to focus for 4 hours. So as your next date gets closer, 6, 5, 4, 3 or 2 weeks away, you should begin taking more full length practice tests and get more comfortable concentrating for 4 hours in a row. Summary Although without a doubt, studying concepts and facts is critical to success on the GRE, if you ignore higher level psychological and “learning theory” considerations, you’ll be at a disadvantage. Addressing these foundational factors will allow you to get far more out of each hour you spend building algebra or verbal reasoning skills. 4 Reasons Internships Prepare You for the Real World

4 Reasons Internships Prepare You for the Real World Image via pexels.com In this aspect, transitioning well from your educational field to a real-world job almost requires some internship experience. There are many reasons internships prepare you for the real world. Here are four key reasons: 1. Grunt work One great thing about doing internships is the ease of the initial shock of entry-level jobs. Because you’ve likely been studying hard during your undergraduate, or perhaps graduate degree, you’ve been doing very specialized and advanced things. However, entry-level jobs can be a bit of a letdown when you realize you aren’t doing the high-level stuff, but the grunt work. Many of your initial duties will be boring, repetitive, and feel less fulfilling than you thought at first. However, many internships will also make you do a bit of the grunt work around the office, so you know what kind of balance to expect from a real-world first job. This takes away the lag time in being productive and also helps you jump right into what you’re supposed to be doing. If you’re already fluent in the basics, it will take less time for you to move up the ranks. 2. Diversity Depending on your university, you may have a very diverse student body or a very similar one. However, one thing usually stays the same when it comes to college student bodies: age. A majority of the students will be in their late teens to mid-twenties when it comes to undergraduate degrees, which means that besides the likely older professors, you’re only really being exposed to people similar to yourself and of similar experience. However, when you enter an internship, you’ll realize that the scale of diversity expands even wider with age, background, education levels, and experience levels. An internship really helps you learn to navigate the many different people you’re going to be working for and working with. If all your assumptions and work-ethic based actions center around your undergraduate peers, you may make some crucial mistakes when it comes to working with others. An internship beforehand will nurture those techniques to include a broader array of people. 3. Experience You may be lucky to go to a university that cultivates a hands-on approach to learning, but for most of us, our learning comes through reading and lectures. However, reading and lectures are great for your personal knowledge, but really fail to enhance the skills needed for putting that knowledge into action. Internships are a key factor in bridging the gap between education and industry. Internship coordinators are well aware of the educational background most of their interns will have. They are well-versed in techniques to build that knowledge into real-world skills. As an additional note, a common complaint by entry-level applicants is the amount of experience needed to qualify for entry-level jobs. Internships are a great way to earn that experience even before graduation and get a leg up on the other applicants. 4. Connections As you grow older and learn even more about the tricks of the real world, you’ll soon realize that you’re more likely to be hired just because you know someone. Of course, it is always important that you possess the skills and education needed to fill the role, but almost all positions are filled simply by word of mouth. Because of this, connections become extremely important to thriving in real-world jobs. One of the reasons entry-level jobs receive so many applications is because many applicants don’t know anyone yet and this is their only way to get their foot in the door. However, an internship allows you the time and resources to make those connections early on. It may not be that you are offered a job at the same company after the internship ends, but your coworkers and managers may be likely to call you if they hear something open up elsewhere. You can also talk to the company about other similar companies they have connections to. An internship coordinator is a great person to have as a reference or recommendation. Indeed, the list of reasons could be nearly endless. If internships are available to you, it would be a mistake not to capitalize on all the benefits it could have for your career now and later. The knowledge and experience you gain about the real world from an internship become  an invaluable resource.
